Sea Lice from Fish Farms: Initiative to close some farms
The Georgia Strait Coalition (www.GeorgiaStrait.org) has an initiative “The Wild Salmon Narrows Declaration” which asks that some of the operating fish farms be closed, and that licenses for others not currently being used be revoked to protect a major wild salmon migration route:
All Eagle Watch volunteers for the 2009/2010 season are invited to a volunteer appreciation supper at The Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday February 6th at 6pm. This is an evening to celebrate and evaluate our program and to acknowledge all the work our volunteers have done.
Two dozen grade ten students from the Don Ross Secondary’s wilderness leadership class hiked out into the rainy central meadows of the Squamish estuary on Thursday, January 28. They were accompanied by their teachers, Devon Biln and Mary Henderson, and by Society board members Catherine Jackson and Roland Semjanovs.
Between September and November SES worked in collaboration with Squamish Trails Society, Squamish River Watershed Society and Streamkeepers to negotiate a compromise solution to the request for removal of trees along the Discovery Trail in front of Holiday Inn. Land developers Anthem Properties were advised by District planners and Highways to work with stakeholders as this is publicly owned land. Removal of trees in front of Walmart along the Discovery Trail some years ago had resulted in public outcry.
In response to GAS’ latest proposal for solving the water supply issues at Brohm Ridge, Environment Assessment Office (EAO) Director Graeme McLaren has asked for more information on several major deficiencies in the submitted reports and plans.
Since the original submission showed that planned reservoir capacity could supply only a fraction of projected demands, GAS has needed to take drastic action to fulfill needs and plans to use dangerous terrain to build reservoirs that threaten downstream safety.
Lots of opportunities to come out and learn about our local birds on the bird count that happens every month and the special annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC). Please see the following link for information on the next bird count, and previous month results. Winter months are a great time to observe the migrating birds that come through the estuary. Bring some binoculars if you have them and some warm clothes, experienced birders are eager to share their knowledge with new volunteers with keen eyes!
Returning Directors Sandra Bicego and Catherine Jackson welcome new Directors Lisa Princic, Theresa Negrieff, David Crewson, Sarah Greenwood and Roland Semjanovs to the Board for 2010.

The AGM Panel Discussion ‘Energizing the Environmental Voice in Squamish’ made for an interesting, engaging evening. Some good ideas were generated with unity and collaboration emerging as a key point. One suggestion was for a ‘Green Summit’ to be organized twice a year for all environmentally focussed groups in Squamish to come together, discuss a central theme and follow up with an intense week of campaigning to spread the word to the community.

Description: This month we are very fortunate to have mushroom expert Terry
Taylor as our walk leader. Terry will take us on a walk through the forest
where we’ll look for fungi, learn what they are and how to identify them,
and about their role in the forest ecosystem. Wear good walking shoes and
dress for the weather. About 2 hours walking on flat, but rooty trails.
Please no dogs.
Walk leader Terry Taylor has been active in Vancouver Mycological Society
