AGM News

The AGM Panel Discussion ‘Energizing the Environmental Voice in Squamish’ made for an interesting, engaging evening. Some good ideas were generated with unity and collaboration emerging as a key point. One suggestion was for a ‘Green Summit’ to be organized twice a year for all environmentally focussed groups in Squamish to come together, discuss a central theme and follow up with an intense week of campaigning to spread the word to the community.

The Strategy Plan was also presented which is now in its final draft form. A result of many hours of membership consultation, the plan should be available for all to read shortly for final comments. Two new program areas have been incorporated into our existing Education and Conservation programs: Advocacy for public space for parks and public enjoyment and advocacy for the promotion and support of local, sustainable businesses to create a sustainable local economy that is more resilient and does not require continued urban sprawl to create jobs.

The vote on a new working name for SECS gave us Squamish Environment Society, a much easier name to say and remember that does not conjure any distractions in its acronym form, SES.

The new board was voted in by acclamation, returning Board members Sandra Bicego and Catherine Jackson welcome new board members Theresa Negrieff, Lisa Princic, Sarah Greenwood, Roland Semjanovs and David Crewson. Together we look forward to taking action on some key goals identified in the Strategy Plan. We will keep you posted and let you know about future volunteer opportunities!
