Estuary Guided Walk with Outdoor Leadership

Two dozen grade ten students from the Don Ross Secondary’s wilderness leadership class hiked out into the rainy central meadows of the Squamish estuary on Thursday, January 28. They were accompanied by their teachers, Devon Biln and Mary Henderson, and by Society board members Catherine Jackson and Roland Semjanovs.

The three-hour outing gave the students a first-hand glimpse of the importance of the estuary wetlands in the local ecology and how it provides important habitat for a variety of species. They learned how the fields of sedges filter silts from the flowing river waters; about the importance of estuary channels in providing habitat for growing salmon and other species that congregate in these areas; and they also saw how human impacts change the face of the estuary habitats.

We are hoping that this will be the first of many such excursions where we introduce school children and other locals to the interesting aspects of estuary ecology.

Please contact us at info@squamishenvironment.ca if you would like us to guide a group walk in the estuary for your group or class. You can also get in touch with us if you would like the opportunity to volunteer, learn more and help lead a guided walk in the Squamish Estuary.
