The Squamish Environment Society aims are to Enjoy Nature, Share Knowledge, and Preserve Natural Ecosystems. We operate in the Upper Howe Sound region of British Columbia, Canada.
Through the years SES has partnered with many environmental and funding organizations to provide programs and services to residents and visitors. SES maintains a balance of program delivery, education activities, advisory and advocacy work.
SES (previously the Squamish Estuary Conservation Society) was formed in 1982 as a result of a proposal by BC Rail to construct a coal port in the Squamish Estuary. Advocacy efforts resulted in the creation of a Wildlife Management Area, preserving about half of the estuary.
Name changes in 2002 and 2009 reflected concern for environmental issues beyond the needs of the Squamish Estuary.
SES operates with a volunteer Board of Directors elected at the October Annual General Meeting.
