BC Parks Volunteer of the Year: Rachel Shephard

BC Parks has honoured a long-time and very active SES member with its BC Parks Volunteer of the Year Award for 2019 – 2020. The award recognizes Rachel’s work on the Western Toad Monitoring project  which is centred in Alice Lake Provincial Park. Here’s a link to the BC Parks news release.

Rachel was quick to point out that the award is really honouring everyone whose volunteer work has made the project possible. “I feel like the award really belongs to all of us. Everyone has put in a number of dedicated hours, doing surveys from shore and by kayak, as well as taking and editing underwater video. Our volunteers have been engaging with park visitors when safe to do so, explaining our work and enlisting support for our toad populations.  Our combined efforts make the project  successful! We also have to thank Joanna Hirner, our fantastic BC Parks liaison. I’m sure there are hundreds of other dedicated volunteers around the province, but she took time out of her busy schedule to write a nomination – and I think that speaks volumes about the way she supports us.”

Well done, everyone!
