EagleWatch Daily Count : 2023 – 2024 season

This season, EagleWatch volunteers will be at Eagle Run dike to monitor the eagle population.  We will be posting morning and afternoon eagle counts as well as comments about the weather and other sightings. Counts will be posted starting on November 4.

Jan 7 Annual Brackendale Winter Eagle Count->->99664 volunteers were assigned to cover 21 areas to be counted, from the Upper Squamish to downtown Squamish, and from Paradise Valley to the Stawamus River. Bald eagles detected along the Eagle Run Dike (EagleWatch survey area) are included in this total.

Jan 6 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM202Weather: 1˚C; fresh snow on the mountain peaks with a dusting of snow lower down; sun on the mountain tops (beautiful); blue skies above but low cloud, dense fog lower down; very foggy along the river banks making it difficult to see & count; icy, very damp and chilly this morning - but refreshing & beautiful! Other observations: River: lots of suds; larger island partially covered with water due to higher water level; flow is rapid.

Other observations: A very quiet and uneventful morning; 1 bufflehead flying south; few seagulls: flying south 1 + 3; flying North 3 + 8; The River: the river is lower this morning; the larger island is visible again; suds still emanating from the out-flow valve again; most noticeable was the ROAR of the river water.

Other observations: Few birds were seen: one seagull on the light post; 4 gulls on the river bank; 1 on the large island; groups of gulls flying North - flock of 10, flock of 6, group of 3, and one on its own & 3 ducks in the water.

Watched an adult eagle drift and swim down river dragging a fish from near the Water shed to the west side of the river near the log jam. One seal tailed the eagle until the eagle reached shore. A few water fowl and sea gulls.

Weather: 0 to 3 degrees C; steady rain; dike walk was very wet with many puddles; it was overcast; the surrounding mountains were surrounded with fog and low cloud; it was misty; the visibility was poor and our binoculars steamed up! Other observations: We observed 2 bufflehead ducks; 1 seagull on an island; few smallish flocks of seagulls (5 to 15 gulls per flock) were flying North.

Other observations: 2 adult eagles were on the beach, feet in the water; 3 adults were perching; People: 2 different people with 1 dog each; 1 person with camera (saw him yesterday as well); sea gulls: 7 flying North; flock of 50 flying North; 20 more also flying North; 105 + also flying North; 2 on larger sand island; 1 lone merganzer.
Dec 23 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM415Weather: 4 degrees C, no precipitation, partly cloudy with light wind. Other observations: 1 harbour seal, a few Barrow's Goldeneye and Common Merganser, approx. 30 people walking along the dike.
Dec 23 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM718Weather: -3 degrees to 1 degree C; sunny with low cloud; more fresh snow on Diamond Head Mountain; and the river water was high - no smaller sand islands were showing. Other observations: We saw 2 buffleheads then later saw 17 buffleheads swimming in deeper water; the eagles were chattering; 1 adult eagle was playing with a gull in flight; circling; 2 more gulls joined in; this went on for about 7 minutes (fun to watch); sea gulls: 2 flying North; a flock of about 25 also flying North; another flock of approximately 40 flying North.

Dec 17 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM202Weather: 7 degrees C, partial clouds, lots of blue. Other observations: Various duck species like common mergansers and buffleheads. Probably about 30 people walking the dike. A few plus dogs down on the beach.
Dec 17 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM426Weather: 4 degrees C; clear skies with some low cloud; the mountains North of us near Whistler were covered with new snowfall since yesterday's observations; Diamond Head also displayed a new dusting of snow; and the river was flowing more slowly than the morning before. Other observations: 3 adult eagles were perching across the river, 1 was flying and perched high on a conifer tree in the Easter Seal Camp area and started chattering during our entire walk back to the car; we did see 2 cyclists; later on we saw 2 walkers with 1 dog, another walker with 1 dog, 4 adults with a toddler and 1 dog, and 2 walkers with one dog off-leash; a flock of 6 buffleheads swimming; 2 sea gulls perched on a log in the middle of the river.

Other observations: What was interesting this AM was the amount of eagle activity: 2 adults eating salmon on the sand bar, one with three crows circling; 5 adults and 3 juveniles "kettling" for some time over the river; the eagles were very vocal this morning and many were flying about. We also observed 1 heron; 2 harbour seals; several ducks swimming; and very few sea gulls.

Got to see a few eagles eating fish in the trees near the northern most parking lot. My count includes 5 eagles seen far down south through binoculars.

Other observations: Common mergansers x4, mallard, heron, buffleheads x3, seals x2, roughly 40 ppl walking along dike, no eagles when I arrived around 2:10, most action between 2:30-3. Brought a scope and invited ppl to look at the eagles through it. Fisherman with golden retriever waded out to main central gravel bar and several people with off leash dogs along the shoreline across from Watershed Grill. Lots of glare from setting sun making visibility challenging.

Other observations: Today, the eagles were easier to count since many leaves have fallen from the deciduous trees. We saw over 110 sea gulls in flight; 40 sea gulls swimming; no ducks or heron were seen; 1 dog walker; 8 people walking; 2 people running; several eagles (2 adults and 2 juveniles) were on the larger sandbar island and 2 juveniles were in flight; the remaining eagles were in trees across the river; no eagles were seen across Government Road.

Nov 5 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM12618Weather: 12°C; overcast, cloudy; we saw the tail end of a rainbow as we walked onto the dike; it started to rain lightly as we completed our count. Other observations: When we arrived, it was clear that the river was still very muddy with some debris being washed down stream; The up rooted tree was still stranded on the small sand bar which was now submerged under cloudy water still moving rapidly; We heard one eagle voicing its unique call as we arrived on the dike (a good omen); We saw Gulls (at least 74 flying overhead and too many to count on the small island to the North); 1 lone male bufflehead duck swimming across the river near the sandy beach; 19 people of various ages walking&/or biking with dogs; 1 large dead salmon at the mouth of the outflow stream head; 47 folks of various ages, some with children, walking along the dike; 2 people running along the dike heading North; and it started to rain lightly just as we completed our counts & observations. We saw no eagles or evidence of eagle presence on the Govt Rd side of the dike this morning.

Nov 4 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM12113Weather: 13°C; windy; Slight rain at first, then heavier - needed to use the umbrella. The river was ripping - lots of debris moving down the river; one large tree washed onto island with roots exposed; river very brown and murky with material from up-stream; Overcast. A very quiet day on the dike - no dog walkers, no families, etc.
Other observations: One adult eagle called out several times with its distinct call; we saw about 20 seagulls in flight; no seals spotted; no other water birds spotted; two people were seen - one running on the dike another just walking up to the dike from the road; no other bird species observed.
