This season we’re celebrating 30 years of EagleWatching in Squamish!
Our EagleWatch program which began during the 1995 – 1996 season returns to the banks of the Squamish River in Brackendale from November 1 through January 3. Counts take place in one-hour shifts twice daily. Come out and count with us to share knowledge about the eagles with our followers and to contribute to our long-term monitoring program.
There are no minimum shift requirements to participate in EagleWatch and no experience is required. Training materials are provided and mentoring is available. All you need is a pair of binoculars and a pair of eagle eyes. If you don’t have binoculars, we may be able to lend you a pair. Bring your friends and family, or join our monthly social counts with other EagleWatchers.
One of the main reasons bald eagles choose to overwinter in our area is the salmon returning to the Squamish River and its tributaries. With many of British Columbia’s rivers expected to see record salmon returns this season, we’re hoping to see good returns here too. Will an abundance of salmon increase the number of bald eagles we see? Come count with us to find out!
