Making Squamish a Bird Friendly City
The Bird Friendly Squamish team has been working towards certifying Squamish as a Bird Friendly City through Nature Canada’s certification program. This involves reducing threats to birds, protecting and restoring natural habitat, increasing climate resiliency, and most importantly, empowering community action. Because when we protect birds, we’re also supporting healthy ecosystems and building better, greener communities for everyone.
Why does this matter? For one, Canada loses an estimated 16–42 million birds a year to window collisions alone. Pesticides and herbicides are another major threat, yet birds naturally help control pests and pollinate plants. By making our city safer for birds, we also make it more liveable, beautiful, and biodiverse for ourselves.
So put on your brightest, birdiest outfit, and join us in welcoming back the birds this spring.
