On September 10th, our community lost an extraordinary mentor, friend, and inspiration. Chris Dale was more than just a remarkable birder; he was a kind, humble soul who left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Chris grew up and worked at Woodfibre, where he cultivated his love for the natural world. He loved to hike, immersing himself in the landscapes that would later inspire his birding adventures. His passion for birding became the cornerstone of his life and his legacy. As the leader of the Squamish monthly bird counts, caretaker of our Important Bird Area, and a devoted participant in the Christmas Bird Counts and owl surveys, Chris was a guiding force for bird enthusiasts across the region. He was always out in the field, binoculars in hand, creating eBird checklists and sharing his knowledge with those eager to learn.
It feels especially meaningful that Chris’s presence was felt so strongly during November’s monthly bird count, as he passed away during the very event he had led with such dedication and passion. Though he was no longer physically with us, the unusually large turnout of participants—many new to the count—felt like a testament to his influence and spirit. As we walked and talked, sharing stories and memories of Chris, it felt as though he was there with us, guiding us one last time through his beloved tradition.
Chris wasn’t just a birder—he was a teacher. With unmatched patience and enthusiasm, he took new birders under his wing, offering encouragement and wisdom that helped many grow into confident birdwatchers. His ability to find joy in the simple act of observing birds and his eagerness to share that joy brought countless people closer to nature.
But Chris’s love extended far beyond birds. He adored his wife, Bev, and their life together was filled with warmth and laughter. Whether he was cooking for her, encouraging her accordion playing, or heading out for walks and bike rides, their bond was a testament to love in its truest form. Chris also had a soft spot for dogs, always keeping treats in his pocket for the four-legged friends he’d meet along the way. His generosity and thoughtfulness extended to everyone he encountered, making him not only a beloved mentor but a treasured friend.
Chris Dale was a man of humility, kindness, and immense knowledge. He gave freely of himself to his community and touched countless lives with his mentorship, friendship, and unwavering care. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the birds he loved, the trails he walked, and the hearts of those who carry on his legacy.
Thank you, Chris, for all you shared with us. You will always be a part of Squamish and its skies.
