Calling All EagleWatch Volunteers

Fall is here, the leaves are changing colour, the salmon are returning to spawn, and our eagles will soon be back. The Squamish Environment Society’s EagleWatch Program is looking for volunteer EagleWatchers!

Who: Anyone with good eyesight and a pair of binoculars! We recommend EagleWatching with a pair of 8x or 10x-powered binoculars. If you’re interested in volunteering but do not have binoculars, please reach out! We can pair you up on a counting shift with another volunteer who does or we can loan you a pair! We welcome new volunteers, provide reference materials, and can arrange for a shift with an experienced counter to help familiarize you. Family groups are welcome.

What: EagleWatching involves walking along the Eagle Run dike for 30-60 minutes counting bald eagles that are perched in trees, feeding on salmon from the sand bars, or soaring in the sky above. Eagle Run is an accessible gravel pathway. Public parking is available as well as public transportation.

Where: Eagle Run dike on Government Road in Brackendale. Right beside The Watershed Grill, along the Squamish River!

When: Flexible one-hour shifts that occur twice daily from Saturday, November 2nd, 2024 to Sunday, January 5th, 2025. You’re welcome to sign up for one shift per day or more, according to your availability.

Why: To contribute to a long-term citizen science initiative monitoring an overwintering population of bald eagles and to share information about our eagles with our community in Squamish and online.

To sign up please connect with eaglewatch@squamishenvironment.ca or fill out our sign up form.
