Board Member: We are looking for committed individual to fill a vacant board position until our AGM at the end of October (with the option to stand for election for the following year).

  • The role is ideal for someone who wants to learn more about Nature Squamish in a hands-on way and actively contribute to running the Society.
  • This is a ‘working board’ position and the Director will be expected to take on tasks suited to their skills and experience.
  • The board meets in person, on the 3rd Thursday of each month in the evening. Between meetings, Directors oversee and contribute to their portfolio, with an average workload of 2-4 hours per week.
  • Some current needs include: administrative support, volunteer coordination, and fundraising.

Admin Support: We are looking for an organized self starter who has 1-2 hours per week to provide administrative support on an ongoing basis.

  • This role is ideal for someone who wants to learn more about Nature Squamish in a hands-on way.
  • Familiarity with Google Drive, Gmail, and Canva is an asset.
  • The primary role involves checking email accounts and responding to (or re-directing) inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Other tasks could include compiling and formatting presentations and annual reports, digitizing and filing society documents, and organizing files and photos.
  • Mentoring is available as you settle into the role.
  • Tasks are primarily computer-based and can be completed from anywhere.

Western Toad Survey Team: We are looking for dedicated volunteers to conduct breeding surveys at Alice Lake Provincial Park, from mid-late March through April.

  • We ask for a commitment of one shift per week through the breeding season (4-6 shifts). Each shift takes approximately 4 hours and is conducted in the afternoon.
  • Surveys are suited to adults with good observation skills, fitness, and mobility (for carrying equipment and conducting surveys via kayak or shoreline).
  • No experience is necessary—only good observation skills, the ability to follow survey protocols, and careful data recording. Training is provided.
  • Please note: There is no public transit to Alice Lake Provincial Park, so a vehicle is essential.

Bird Friendly Squamish (various roles): We are in the midst of organising our annual festival to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day, and would love to hear from anyone with interest or experience in outreach, planning, photography, permit applications, and leading bird walks or other activities. Additionally, please reach out if you have an idea or if you’re an organisation who would like to celebrate birds in your own way!

Important Bird Area (IBA) and Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) Caretaker(s): Squamish is a certified IBA and KBA, and rightly so! Caretakers for this area will conduct tasks such as data entry, monitoring, outreach, advocacy and stewardship, and conservation planning.

Reviewer for BC Timber Sales Proposals: From time to time, BC Timber Sales (BCTS) sends Nature Squamish (Squamish Environment Society) a request to review proposals for changes related to management of our forests. Changes can relate to areas protected as old growth forest or blocks of forest to be made available for harvest. BCTS wishes to determine whether there are any concerns and/or possible impacts to our interests within the proposed harvest areas. These review requests have a time limit and we don’t have any dedicated resources for tasks like this, so we encourage anyone interested in conducting or helping conduct such reviews to temporarily act as a volunteer Technical Advisor to our Board of Directors.
