EagleWatch Daily Count : 2020 – 2021 season

This season, although we won’t have an EagleWatch presence at Eagle Run dike, we will be posting morning and afternoon eagle counts as well as comments about the weather and other sightings.

Much cavorting and preening by the eagles. including 2 who posed in the cedar tree by the EagleWatch shelter and 3 who perched in line on a tree limb down by the nest behind the log pile (south of the dike).

Nov 24: 10:00 am14317Weather: 5 degrees with wind SSE 10 KPH. Only 5 visitors showed up to be watched by the eagles. There was also 1 wet Great Blue Heron and 3 wet Pacific Harbour Seals, 2 of which were successful fish catchers, although 1 was competing with a gull to retain possession of the fish.

Nov 23: 10:00 am29534Weather: 4 degrees with wind NNE 2 KPH. 4 Pacific Harbour Seals, 8 Common Mergansers, 5 Buffleheads, 25 Northwestern Crows near the south log jam. Water was very low, exposing the sand bars and gravel sides to the north. 5 eagles were eating 2 salmon and also bathing in the shallows of the sand bars and at the South end at the log jam where most of the eagles were congregated.

Nov 20 - 10:00 am17320Weather: 5 degrees and calm. Rain with mist. 6 visitors on the dike. NB: 2 of the eagles shown as juvenile were actually unknown.
Nov 19 - 2:00 pm20121Weather: 7 degrees with wind SE 4 KPH. Rain and fog closed in at the N end of the dike, making visibility up river poor for eagle spotting. Eagles were quite active, several feeding on the shores or sand bars, others flying low over the river. 3 swans (believed to be Trumpeters) flew over the river. 2 Great Blue Herons, at least 5 Pacific Harbour Seals.

Nov 8 - 3:00 pm628Weather: 8 degrees, wind NW 11 KPH. 54 visitors on the dike, trying to spot eagles in the distance or directly up sun. At exactly 3:00 pm, an adult and a juvenile flew down river and proceeded to do a mini soar round and round the viewing shed. They did 4 laps at about 30 metres and then headed south. Great show!
