EagleWatch Daily Count : 2020 – 2021 season

This season, although we won’t have an EagleWatch presence at Eagle Run dike, we will be posting morning and afternoon eagle counts as well as comments about the weather and other sightings.

Other notes from the observer: "A sandbar is developing off the S end of the dike. The river is low despite so much rain in the last while. We wonder what is happening."

One adult eagle perched in the tall spruce over the shelter and was popular with all. 4 adult eagles were reported at the Hwy 99 bridge over Mamquam river. 1 Great Blue Heron, 1 Mallard.

Eagles were quite active, zooming overhead and shifting around. Most chose perches that gave them a view to check out rodents at Hop Creek Farm. Frank the Great Blue Heron resumed his post by the river and one lone Pacific Harbour Seal emerged , just as the volunteers were leaving.

Frank the Great Blue Heron was fishing at the culvert at the foot of Dryden, and 1 Pacific Harbour Seal was patrolling downstream from the culvert. 2 Common Mergansers were also fishing. Dec 10: 10:00 am23528Weather: 4 degrees with wind N 3 KPH. Cloudy with no significant rain. All juvenile eagles were interested in competing for salmon. 2 eagles sighted at the nest across Gov't Rd at the south end of the dike. Best viewing of the day was on the gravel bars above the bend in the river. "We observed 1 eagle launch herself into the river and retrieve a large salmon, then stepping ashore with a bit of the gait of a seaman on leave after a multi-month voyage. Naturally, she was joined by many companions and 10 minutes later, no remnants of the fish were visible on the shore."

Eagle count was started at the South end of the dike: the observer noted that many of the eagles reported as adult could have been juveniles. Cloud and fog were moving in from up river as the count was being done, and many eagles could have been missed because of the difficulty of counting in those conditions, even with binoculars. Many eagles were reported along the Mamquam in the vicinity of Centennial Road and Highway 99: 10 were perched in a single tree.

The rest of the eagles were on the west side, downriver.

Our Great Blue Herons were on station: Frank was back to sitting on his shoreline rock and Francine in a tall cottonwood. 2 Pacific Harbour Seals were cavorting in the current. As for the eagles - perhaps they too were enjoying the sunshine and crisp air. If so, most were doing it elsewhere.

There was also 1 wet Great Blue Heron and 3 wet Pacific Harbour Seals, 2 of which were successful fish catchers, although 1 was competing with a gull to retain possession of the fish.

Water was very low, exposing the sand bars and gravel sides to the north. 5 eagles were eating 2 salmon and also bathing in the shallows of the sand bars and at the South end at the log jam where most of the eagles were congregated.

Lots of folks really intrigued with the seals.

Nov 8 - 3:00 pm628Weather: 8 degrees, wind NW 11 KPH. 54 visitors on the dike, trying to spot eagles in the distance or directly up sun. At exactly 3:00 pm, an adult and a juvenile flew down river and proceeded to do a mini soar round and round the viewing shed. They did 4 laps at about 30 metres and then headed south. Great show!
