Event report: Earth Weekend, April 22 and 23, 2017

Here are some scenes from the Saturday, April 22nd Earth Day activities hosted by the Squamish Environment Society.  The participants in the birding walk were very disappointed to find out that they had just missed sighting a bobcat!

Winners of the Scavenger Hunt prize draw were Keira Blaikie (5 years old), Aviv Bokovza (8 years) and Agam Bokovza (10 years), with prizes supplied by Climb On.

On Sunday SES members worked with the Squamish Trails Society and together collected a hefty three pickup truck loads of garbage as part of ‘Pitch In’ week.  Of course, picking up the garbage was just the first part. Everything was sorted and everything possible was diverted from the landfill.  Two loads of mixed recyclables went to Carney’s and the scrap metal depot but despite all best efforts, more than 2000 kg had to go to the landfill. A sharp-eyed volunteer also did a little recycling from the landfill: he found some useable lumber and hardwood items which we will no doubt see being repurposed.

Sunday evening SES hosted the screening of The Messenger and attracted interest in the Purple Martin nest box and Biodiversity Squamish initiatives underway.
